Abstract

In Japan, production of cut bulb flowers has markedly expanded since 1988. The expansion of Asiatic or Oriental hybrid lilies and tulips using imported bulbs from Holland is outstanding. Culture methods for cut flower production of major bulb crops in Japan are introduced. In gladiolus, year round production in the open field is established based on the climate of each growing area from southern to northern part of Japan. In Easter lilies, year round production of cut flowers is established by forcing of vernalized Easter lily bulbs and cultivation of Lilium ¡¿ formolongi. Asiatic and Oriental hybrid lilies can be marketed year round by long-term storage of bulbs at -2¡É. Most tulip cut flowers are forced to flower from December to March using the technique of $quot;Direct forcing$quot;. Cut flowers of freesia are harvested from November to June. The flowering period of fresia is advanced to November by precooling the smoke or ethylene treated corms under wet conditions. Accelerated flowering of Dutch iris is achieved by the exposing of bulbs to smoke and precooling before planting and the flowering season is from November to May. The peak of flowering of narcissus is December. Some experimental results obtained at our laboratory are also provided.
